getting used to the small town life

Downtown Houston, Missouri

With the nasty weather behind us, we’ve been able to make it out of the house a little bit over the past week. We managed to make a pit stop in a cute little town named Houston, about 30 miles north of where we live, yesterday. We got the chance to roam around downtown for a short time, but only to hit up the famous Forbes Pharmacy Soda Fountain. It was a little odd to find this cute little ice cream parlor in the back of a large pharmacy but it made up for it with it’s old fashioned charm and yummy desserts.

It had a sit-down counter, picnic tables, and the walls were covered with old metal Coca-Cola and ice cream advertisements. The staff was nice (everyone here is) and their shakes and malts are divine. If you ever get to visit southern Missouri, you have to hit up this old school town. I regret not getting to see more of it but I’m sure I’ll get plenty of chances in the future.

I used to go there as a kid in the 70s and get those great chocolate shakes. My dad went there in the 40s too, and I think he might have worked there. It was a great town; I haven’t been there in almost 20 years.
