So many variables, so little time… It’s been a crazy week around here. Our plans keep changing for one reason or another but I’ll just be glad when it’s all over. One more week and we’ll be gone.
It’s a beautiful day here in SF and I haven’t even been outside. I’m going to miss this place a lot once we leave but there are quite a few things I won’t miss:
1. There’s trash everywhere. Coming from Texas, it was heartbreaking to see such a beautiful place so polluted. They don’t put up with that crap in Texas. You go to jail if you get caught littering. But in SF, they “clean” the streets once a week so everyone figures that it’s okay to litter. It makes me sad…
2. Okay, I realize assholes are everywhere but they seem to flock to this city. I’m not saying everyone here is rude, because they’re not, but these buttheads take the cake. People will intentionally ignore you and then get in your way and stay there. I could give about a thousand examples but I’ll just leave it at that.
3. Section 8 housing at the beach: Why exactly do the people who are living off the rest of us get the prime real estate?
And now for some things that I will miss:
1. Being a short walk from the Pacific Ocean. I can’t say enough about living steps away from the beach. Well, who wouldn’t like that?
2. There are community gardens and parks everywhere. Even in the worst neighborhoods, you can find the most beautiful scenery.
3. Some really great restaurants like The Citrus Club, Park Chow, Dolly’s, and Sushi Zen. There are quite a few good restaurants here but you have to know where they are. They’re hidden amongst all the bad ones. And there are a lot of bad ones, they’re practically on every street corner. So do your homework first, boys and girls, before heading out to find a good restaurant in SF.
Anyway, at this point I’m blabbing. I need to get back to packing. Crap…

huh? where exactly are these folks supposed to sleep? in GG Park, under the overpass, in condemned buildings? guess what? they already do. ocean beach is cold and windy - i doubt that anyone is sleeping there by choice.
have you ever been to section 8 housing? before you leave The City, stop by BV-HP, or the South Slope of Poetrero Hill, or Sunnydale PJs and youll see that life in Section 8 is no day at the beach.
a fair percent of those folks should be receiving room and board up the street at the VA hostpital, but budget cuts have forced old veterans out onto the streets.
if you want to help these folks, head down to The TL, like we did and serve up some meals to the hungry. they are always accepting volunteers and i GUARANTEE you will change your tune after seeing first hand what poverty does to the spirit and lives of people and their families.

To some extent that’s true. But get out of your car and walk along any rural road in Texas, or even I-35, and you’ll see a lot more trash than you imagined. You just can’t see it from your car when it’s going 70 mph. The sections of highway that have good volunteer groups picking up the trash aren’t bad but the rest are pretty disgusting. The roads around our house in Temple were lined with cans, bottles, cigarette packs, etc. And anywhere that was relatively secluded often had been illegally turned into a mini-dump.
Oh, and yes, moving sucks. Like Bart Simpson says it “both sucks AND blows”. If I were within a 500 mile radius I would offer to help though.
dean - Haha… Yeah, now that I think about it - I have two words for you: El Paso. Yuck.
plug1 - um, I think you may have misunderstood what I said or maybe I just said it the wrong way. I live near Ocean Beach, I know it’s cold as shit. But have you seen the public housing along Ocean Beach? It’s a lot nicer than most of the houses in the surrounding neighborhood.
And yes, I have been to Section 8 housing here in SF and several other cities in the US. I have volunteered at soup kitchens and community centers so please don’t presume to know what I’ve seen of poverty and desperation.
I know that there are many people who desperately need this kind of help. Families, disabled vets and senior citizens, just to name a few. But there are leeches also. And a lot of them. These are the people I see living 20 feet from the beach living off of my hard earned income and yours. That just doesn’t seem fair to me. Does that seem fair to you?
BTW, good post…
