the making of a lightbox

cutting the sides out of the lightbox

Last week we decided to make a cheap lightbox at home. We had also rented a Canon EF 180 mm f/3.5L macro lens from BorrowLenses.com so we wanted to test them both out. We followed this great tutorial to make the lightbox and ended up using a 100W floodlight and a desk lamp for lighting, an old cardboard box, a white poster board and tissue paper. Not the most sophisticated lighting system but it got the job done. Almost. Click below to see images.

Unfortunately, the images came out a little yellow but after a tiny bit of manipulation in Lightroom, the end result is pretty good I think.

What do you think? Not bad, right?

The rubber band ball came out great. Troll dolls creep me out. The pencils should probably be de-linted to maximize the impact of the photo. As far as the yellow tint, you need to set a custom white balance in the camera before you start shooting. You’ll get better results than doing correction in post-processing. Google “custom white balance” for some good tutorials, and you might also try adding your camera model to the search. You should be able to get a gray card for setting the custom white balance very cheaply.
